Ovi Maps has gone FREE

Ovi Maps is the Turn-by-turn navigation software that is included on all Nokia smartphones with GPS. Today Nokia announced that the Turn-by-turn feature will now become free in the latest release of Ovi Maps.
This is likely a response to the latest release of Google Maps Mobile on Android which offers free turn-by-turn voice directions.
Nokia most likely released that having a navigation option in their phones that required payment to be fully functional was hurting their image compare to the latest Android phones.
Currently the new Ovi Maps release is available for the following: Nokia X6, Nokia N97 mini, E72, E55, E52, Nokia 6730 classic, Nokia 6710 Navigator, Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic, Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition, Nokia 5230.

    The new Ovi Map features:
  • Free Drive navigation
  • Free Walk navigation
  • Free maps and map updates
  • Free Events guides
  • Free Lonely Planet guides
  • Free Michelin guides

Devices such as the original Nokia N97 will be getting the new version at a later date.
